I started shipping them because of one of my daydreams that turned into another unfinishied fanfic. In a nutshell, Azula is banished after the war and after many hardships she ends up a monk at the southern air temple where Aang is reviving the Air Nomad culture. If you're wondering how, it's by adopting orphans from the other three nations and giving them a new life. In my fantasy avatarverse, this is how the nomads had done it. That would explain the absence of family ties in the culture.
